In 1985, when MULTIBANCO card is launched, the issuers start to provide to their clients the
access, at the Automated Teller Machine (ATM), to a set of operations until then only available at
bank agencies: withdrawals, account balance, statement enquiries and even checkbook requests.
With a major acceptance by the clients who recognize and appreciate the convenience and
reliability of the service provided, MULTIBANCO card has soon become present in our daily life.
In 1987, MULTIBANCO card started to provide electronic payments at the point-of-sale (POS
terminals), strengthen the card’s functionality to its owners and providing to merchants an
alternative solution to accept electronic payments safely and efficiently.
Along the years, MULTIBANCO card has strengthened its services’ wide offer, providing
around 60 different operations at the ATM (30 of these also available at POS).
Of all these transactions, some of which are innovative at a global scale, we highlight the
service payments, the State payments, and the mobile phone top-ups anywhere and despite the
client's bank.
Today there are more than 19 million MULTIBANCO cards, of which, 98% are co-branded with
prestigious international systems, such as Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.
MULTIBANCO card can be used in more than 13 thousand ATM terminals and in more than 200
thousand POS terminals.
