Launched in 1996, MB PHONE is an innovative service that allows the same set of operations
performed at the ATM to be performed at a mobile phone. Customer experience is enhanced and
facilitated by providing the same screens as at an ATM via a Java application. Users can also use
the service through sms and voice mail.
The service requires a previous sign-up and allows the user to associate up to 5 bank accounts
to each mobile phone number. The available operations are: mobile phone top-ups, bill payments,
balances enquiry, account movements enquiry, BIN, cheque books request and transfers between the
associated accounts.
The activation of the service (banking account is associated to the client’s phone number)
is generally performed at an Automated Teller Machine (ATM), using the card of the intended
account. In some instances, where the bank so determines, the activation process must be done at a
bank’s branch.
MB PHONE service is available 24 hours a day in Portugal, or in any other country with which the
mobile operator has roaming agreements.
By combining the mobility and functionality feature, the service serves both the final consumer
and the shareholder banks that offer a service that fulfills their clients’ needs.
